Hold On/Let Go

Hold On/ Let Go was a collaborative project between artists Heather Steckler and Harper Folsom and their Iowa City community.

With the support of Public Space One, Heather & Harper collected objects that community members were holding onto, but wished to let go. Some items were inherited from loved ones, accumulated at a meaningful stage of life, or were simply too difficult to throw away. Some participants wanted others to appreciate a precious memento, and some never wanted to look at their items again.

The artists provided opportunities to collaborate through free community workshops, hosted in collaboration with Iowa City Press Co-Op. Participants were invited to record and repurpose objects through papermaking, cyanotype, and collage.

The project culminated in an exhibition at Public Space One Northside Gallery that showcased the creative efforts of the artists’ collaboration with each other and with their community.

The project explored the intersection of memory, purpose, and the act of releasing the things we carry with us. What conditions make it okay to release control over physical possessions, and how does giving up that control allow us to have agency in other aspects of our lives?
